The ancient shape-shifter, caught at the exact second he stops being human.

This is Proteus — old prophet, sea-god, the one who becomes anything to avoid telling the truth — frozen at the instant the transformation takes hold. His white-bearded upper body still reads as weathered and commanding, one arm raised in prophetic gesture, the other hand already dispersing into foam. Below, the human form gives way entirely: tentacular masses and breaking spray bleeding downward into deep black negative space, the boundary between figure and ocean dissolved beyond recovery. A small winged form — a bird, possibly a dove — appears upper left, rendered in the same halftone ink, witness to the whole undoing.

The artwork is after an antique engraving from a museum's public-domain collection — an old master's line, not a generated image. Printed as a single bone-cream ink on Black Heather cotton, it reads as a high-contrast monochrome illustration: Baroque chiaroscuro depth, woodcut grain texture, ink-drip edges that make the dissolution feel live on the fabric. The figure sits high and dominant on the chest, its churning lower mass pulling the eye downward in a clean vertical composition. No colour, no clutter — just the drama of the original line, scaled to wear.

Perfect for:

• Anchoring a dark, understated fit — black jeans, wide-leg trousers, a heavy overshirt left open

• The shelf or the rotation of someone who takes art seriously and wears it accordingly

• Gifting to anyone drawn to mythology, gothic art, or the kind of imagery that holds up under a second look

• Layering under a jacket when you want the graphic to surface in pieces

The details:

• Garment colour: Black Heather

• Ink: single bone/cream — monochrome, no colour print

• Fit: unisex relaxed — true to size, works across body types

• Fabric: soft heavyweight cotton with a broken-in feel from the first wear

• Care: machine wash cold, inside out, tumble dry low to protect the graphic

A tee you'll reach for when everything else feels like noise. Add to cart and wear the myth.
