This is the moment before the fall — Patroclus, spear already driving through his side, armour cracked and half-torn from his chest, body wrenching violently around the shaft that enters from the right edge of the frame. One arm flung wide and grasping at nothing. The other hand pressing a wound that won't close. His helmeted head thrown back, face straining upward in a soundless roar, knees already giving — the whole figure caught between standing and the earth, the borrowed plumes of the great helm bent and broken above him. The lower body dissolves at the thighs into vertical drips and scored scratches against the black field, as though the figure is already being swallowed by shadow and myth.

Rendered in a single bone-and-cream ink on Vintage Black, the artwork is a monochrome halftone illustration drawn in the tradition of 19th-century steel-plate engraving — brutal Caravaggesque chiaroscuro, deep textured shadow, the high-contrast drama of a history painting pressed onto cotton.
