The artwork is a black-and-cream monochrome illustration after an antique engraving — old master line work brought forward into something that feels genuinely unsettling and genuinely beautiful at the same time. A great wolf stands on a cracked stone altar, hindquarters already collapsed into bleached bone and crumbling ivory, forepaws still braced in living fur against the edge. Its head is wrenched back, mouth torn open in a howl that dissolves into silence. From its disintegrating spine hang the broken chains of a reliquary, a small tarnished saint's casket swinging loose from its own vertebrae. The rendering is dense chiaroscuro — Caravaggio shadow pooling beneath the altar slab, the fur and bone picked out in harsh raking light — and at the lower edge the whole figure breaks apart into long vertical drips and gouge-marks, receding into vast black negative space. Set low in widely-spaced small capitals: RELIQUARY OF THE LAST BEAST / ALTAR OF UNMAKING.
