It twists violently away from the wound, its vast mane surging forward, jaw spread wide in a silent roar, one massive forepaw driven downward beneath the force of the blow. The near wing is half-raised, bent at the joint, the broad span of it pressed against the motion of the strike. Below, the marble plinth cracks under the weight of what it cannot hold.

The whole composition is rendered in a single bone-cream ink on black — a deep monochrome halftone built in the tradition of heavy engraving and burnished illustration. The light falls the way Caravaggio understood light: from one direction, absolute, carving form out of shadow. The musculature of the lion reads like sculpted marble. The wing, the mane, the cracked stone beneath — all of it resolved in cream and black, nothing more, nothing more needed.
